Adventures in Menstruating Issue #6
Chella Quint has been writing about menstruation for the last six years, and she’s been doing a great job at it. Her zine, Adventures in Menstruating, is one of my favorites.
Not only do I like the aesthetics (I love that retro look, yo), but the content also kicks ass; a mix of articles, personal experience stories, interviews, photography, comic strips, and poems about menstruation are all this chick needs to have a nice evening at home.
My favorite part of issue number six is a single panel comic strip about a vampire tampon who wants to suck your blood. “Tampire” for the win. Just my kind of humor.
That isn’t to say the rest of the issue isn’t equally awesome. I really like the story written by Danae who spoke about her personal experience with menstruation and how she began making period calendars (I want one). It’s not all fun and games though (well it’s my kind of fun and games), articles like “Turns Out This Is Your Mama’s Maxipad” take a critical look at the representation of menstrual products in the media.
My favorite features are personal experience stories (who doesn’t like a good period story, right?) and the product testing reviews. I’m already a fan of the Diva Cup, but I always love seeing people spread love for alternative menstrual products, as well as spreading “acceptance” of what is a totally normal bodily function.
If you’d like to get in touch with Chella Quint, or contribute (I hear there’s a comic special coming up) you can contact her in “lots of new and exciting ways like Twitter: @ChellaQuint, www.chellaquint.com, Adventures in Menstruating on Facebook, at www.chartyourcyclewordpress.com, or good old fashioned email: firstname.lastname@example.org.”
Chella also has a story coming out in a book: Here Come the Brides!: Reflections on Lesbian Love and Marriage. Check it out!
