Star Light, Star Bright, First Star I See Tonight…

It seems like a rather obvious lesson to learn, doesn’t it? Certain actions, relationships, behaviours and thoughts are like poison, and if you keep indulging in the things that ultimately hurt you, sooner or later they’re going to disagree with you.
I think it’s pretty safe to say that most people want to be happy. As human beings, happiness tends to be pretty high on our list of priorities. How we intend to achieve said happiness tends to change a lot from person to person, but the goal remains the same.
I was ten years old and every time I made a wish, blowing out my birthday candles or wishing upon a star, I would ask the universe for happiness. I thought of it as this state of mind I could enter into once I was all grown up and never leave.
The reality is that suffering is a huge part of life and there is no escaping it. Not permanently anyhow, and certainly not by wishing upon a star. You have to identify the things in your life that make you unhappy as well as the things that make you happy. Once you’ve figured that out: stop drinking the poison. In other words, eliminate the things that make you unhappy and cultivate the things that make you happy.
